Due to popular demand, which just means Hazmat, I am to do a guide to the raiding of a hunter, which also coincides with leveling.
Beast Master is THE way to go, its easy for leveling as your pet is a nice personal tank, and its good for raiding as the damage your pet does is just stupid.
If you don't like Beast Mastery, Survival is THE alternative to it for raiding. Beast Mastery is also not a very good thing for PvP, as you are pretty much crippled if they kill your pet, and your shot against other players are just weaksauce.
Due to the fact that your pet is the big source of dmg here, your choice of pet is crucial, no scorpions or pigs please. If you have Wrath of the Lich King, and got exotic Beast Training(which you should have) The Mighty Devilsaur is the best dps pet so far, its Monstrous Bite gives it a 3% increased damage buff for 12 seconds that stacks up to 3 times for a whopping 9%, and can be done every 10 seconds, so as long as it hits, it should always be up.
For those that are still using Burning Crusade pets, go for a Cat or Wind Serpent, as they are about even as far as dmg output.
The best hunters are of course, Orcs. C'mon, a racial 5% increased pet damage, and a 15 sec. Attack Power buff that scales with every level? How can you beat that for a hunter? If you decided to pick something else, Troll is the alternative for the Horde, and Dwarf for the Alliance, as they have Ranged Weapon Specializations that give them a slight advantage.
Now for the serious stuff, dps cycle. Steady Shot mixed in with Auto-Shots is the way to go, and remember to hit your cooldowns whenever they're available. Steady Shot is simply an amazing ability due to its high damage, and low mana cost, stacking haste further improves the value of this skill as it has a cast time. Rapid Fire+Steady Shot spree can be quite destructive.
Here is a Beast Master raiding spec that I cooked up for ye fellows.

Can you have more then one pet?
Keep up the info!
Only one pet out at a time, but yes, you can have more than 1 pet, you just have to have the ones you're not using put in the stables. You could very well tame a cat, put it away, then tame a wind serpent, and choose whichever one you want to take with you.
Hey buddy, how 'bout warlocks? I'm still experimenting...
